What is Hyperthyroidism?

The term “hyperthyroidism” is a form of thyrotoxicosis due to inappropriately high synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormone(s) by the thyroid. The severity of signs and symptoms may be related to the duration of the illness, the magnitude of the hormone excess, and the age of the patient. Symptoms include (but are not limited to): anxiety, racing heart beats, heat intolerance, tremors, and changes in bowel movements (diarrhea) and enlarged thyroid. Although these symptoms may seem unpleasant or uncomfortable, they can be managed well when evaluated, diagnosed and treated by a highly trained thyroid medical professional. Appropriate treatment requires an accurate diagnosis and is influenced by coexisting medical conditions and patient preference.  Hyperthyroidism can be managed well when evaluated, diagnosed and treated by a highly trained thyroid medical professional.
